After serving as a Territory Manager for at least a year, you may be recruited or promoted to Area Sales Manager. This role is intended for sales representatives who have previously been Territory Managers or have sold high-value capital equipment to private businesses or physicians’ offices, specifically to private practices rather than hospitals. This opportunity is for aesthetic laser or device sales representatives ready for a promotion to this title. If your experience is limited to selling to hospitals where the doctor does not personally pay for the equipment, it may be challenging to be considered for this role. Occasionally, though rarely, a client may consider experienced capital sales representatives from outside the aesthetics industry, such as those in hospital equipment or dental sales, for this position. In my experience, I have yet to place a hospital sales representative as an ASM. To be considered for the title of Area Sales Manager, you must close your own deals and achieve significant sales numbers, such as over $1M annually.

If you are an esthetician, an RN, or a pharmaceutical sales representative, or if your experience is primarily in hospital or surgical sales, this will not aid you in obtaining a job for this position. I want to emphasize that if you currently work at a Medspa, with a dermatologist, or in a plastic surgeon’s office performing treatments on patients, or are an RN at a hospital, that experience will not qualify you for this type of role. YOU MUST HAVE CURRENT SALES EXPERIENCE FOR ALL AESTHETIC SALES POSITIONS.

If you are in a role solely focused on reaching out to existing clients for your current employer to check on their status or to encourage them to purchase more products or services over the phone, you will not be considered for this position. If you are not in a position that requires you to get up every day and visit various businesses to present a product your company offers, I will not be able to submit your application. Transitioning into this industry is nearly impossible if you are a pharmaceutical representative. My clients seek candidates who sell a product directly to a business or doctor. A pharmaceutical representative typically sells more of an idea or relationship, hoping the doctor will prescribe their product as much as possible. This demanding role involves driving extensively, entering potential clients’ offices, introducing yourself, and attempting to arrange follow-up meetings to pitch an aesthetic laser.

The annual quota for an ASM generally ranges from $2.5M to over $5M, depending on the company. This position usually offers a base salary of $70k and a car allowance of $600 to $800 per month. After commissions, these roles can pay between $250k and $900k+, depending on your location within the US. Thus, averaging out the highs and lows, the typical total compensation for these ASMs nationwide is approximately $300k to $400k annually.
